Tenerife
Playa de las Americas is the most popular holiday resort in any of the Canary Islands and has been the busiest resort for hotels, bars, restaurants and nightlife for the last forty years. It lies only a short distance from Reina Sofia airport - Tenerife South, and joins on to the very popular resort of Los Cristianos. As most people know, Playa de las Americas is the premier resort for nightlife in Tenerife, but is also home to most of the major attractions in Tenerife.
Playa de Las Americas - Tenerife's Party Zone
"Las Americas" as it is more commonly known, is a mecca for sun worshippers who enjoy the wilder side of life. It is very popular with the younger generation as this resort really comes to life after dark. It is bright, vibrant, brash and exciting; this resort is a pleasure seekers paradise and a sun worshipper’s idea of heaven. Everyone is catered for and the wealth of leisure facilities are truly endless. If you like to party then Playa de las Americas is the resort for you.
Fun in the Sun
Playa de las Americas wrote the book on "fun in the sun" on the island of Tenerife. It is a totally purpose built resort which features all of the south’s entertainment and theme parks. This resort really will cater for your every whim. It boasts an array of man-made beautiful clean sandy beaches whilst offering world class facilities and entertainment. After dark, Las Americas really comes into its own as the multitude of bars, discos and nightclubs gradually seduce you to its own brand of partying - Tenerife style. This really is one fiesta town where you will not get bored, so put on your party head and dance the night away in this sensational sun seekers heavenly paradise.
Restaurants and Bars
As you would expect in Tenerife’s number one tourist resort, Playa de las Americas has an endless supply of bars, clubs and restaurants; everything and everyone is catered for with its wide variety, from the usual overseas British pubs offering every conceivable imported beer and English products, all the way up to award winning international and local cuisine. The problem is always deciding on where to go. If it is foam parties, booze cruises and wild nights out that you seek, then you will certainly get all that in town. Alternatively you will also find traditional fiestas, fine food and family entertainment venues.
With Las Americas now merging into Los Cristianos you can literally choose from hundreds of places to explore. The main centre for nightlife revolves around the Veronicas / Starco areas, generally referred to locally as "the strip". This area has recently gone through a regeneration process and now houses many different late night establishments over three floors and five buildings. Veronicas and Starco are only a 100 metres apart, so wandering between the two complexes is easy and with most clubs not closing until 6 a.m. even the hardest party revellers can enjoy dancing the night away.
Many of the bars and restaurants provide nightly entertainment, including local and international groups, tribute acts, pub quizzes and even bingo and karaoke if you should wish. Children are well catered for with entertainment and there are many great shows - Las Americas even has its own theatre showing internationally known productions. For adult tastes, there is even the odd blue comedian or two to be found to keep you laughing the night away. Playa de las Americas has it all. Another fine area in Playa de las Americas to explore is the Safari Centre. You will find the Safari Centre where Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos meet. It is full of designer label shops, but also a thriving commercial area full of bars and restaurants and great nightlife. The shops stay open until around 10 p.m. so is always busy with shoppers and people milling around.
Watersports
Lovers of watersports should head to Puerto Colon. It is located on the beachfront walkway between Playa de las Americas and Fañabe. Here you will find another busy commercial area packed with bars, street café’s and restaurants. Puerto Colon also enjoys the luxury of a wonderful sand beach that is extremely safe for swimming. The beach is known as Playa La Pinta and is adjacent to the Marina. This beach is disabled-friendly with easy access, and has good amenities including sun beds and parasols. It's fine golden sand is ideal for those who enjoy playing beach games or just sunbathe on a towel. It does not get much better than this.
The marina itself is the primary marina in the south of the island and is home to every water sport attraction imaginable. There are many different whale and dolphin trips - some half day, some full day and even some that go for just a couple of hours. Some of the boats have a glass bottom so that underwater viewing is made easy. Puerto Colon's reputation as the premier water sports centre for the south of Tenerife is built not only from its diving and boat excursions but also as it provides yacht and power boat charters, deep sea fishing excursions and jet ski or seadoo hire. If you wish to do some parascending or any of these other activities, even just hire a pedalo, then look no further than Puerto Colon and La Pinta Beach.
Shopping
Playa de las Americas is brimming with sea-front cafes, bars and restaurants and also has an excellent array of retail shops spread throughout the resort. There are many large supermarkets, which all stock international brands and finding products like daily fresh milk and English bread is easy. Smaller mini marts are scattered everywhere for your holiday essentials and beachwear shops dot the promenade selling sun creams, international newspapers and goodies to keep the kids happy on the beach while you relax in the sun. Las Americas also has many designer shops selling all the international brands at competitive prices. Gold and silver shops offer excellent prices, as do the duty free gift shops and perfume centres. Cigarettes and alcohol are much cheaper in the Canary Islands and can be purchased almost anywhere.
Golfing in Playa de las Americas
Not only is Playa de las Americas home to most of all the major attractions that Tenerife has to offer, it also has its own golf resort. Like the golf courses of Golf del Sur and Amarilla Golf which are also in the south of Tenerife, Golf Las Americas is an excellent course. Nestled between the resorts of Los Cristianos and Las Americas you will find this superb and well looked after golf course just off the main motorway (TF1) at junction 28. Golf Las Americas is an 18 hole, par 72, with an overall length of 6,051 metres (6,617 yards) with many water features and rivers. It has all the facilities you would expect from an international championship course, which include bars and restaurants, a golf pro shop, changing rooms, practice facilities and putting and chipping greens. The resort even has its own hotel for guests, should they wish to stay on the resort itself.
