I read an interesting article in a UK newspaper this week about the millions of young people and families who were warned that they may never be able to buy their own home. The new director general of the Council of Mortgage Lenders said that many people will spend far longer renting than they had previously imagined and in many cases may never go beyond the realms of renting.

It is predicted that the number of homeowners in the UK will drop because lenders will stop handing out generous mortgages that require little or no deposit, with one expert even saying that renting is the new norm. Official figures seem to back up this view with over one million people being force to rent, rather than buy, over the past few years.

However here in Golf del Sur in Costa San Miguel we do not see this trend and the figures issued by local authorities show that Golf del Sur property and Amarilla Golf property is still being purchased at a steady rate. In fact official figures show that in Spain 85% of households are owned compared with 67% in the UK and USA, 55% in France and a lowly 45% in Germany. In my opinion it goes to show that we have just about the right balance both nationally in Spain and locally in Tenerife.
