It is very easy to hire a car in Tenerife and there are many companies to choose from. You can pre-book your rental car to be ready and waiting for you at the airport on your arrival, or you may wish to have your hire car delivered to your resort accommodation free of charge and at a time of your convenience. Many Golf del Sur car hire customers find that a real bonus as it enables them to avoid driving directly after their long journey and frees them to maybe start their holiday off a bit early with a beer or two on the flight.
Check the car hire Fuel Policy
With the Internet, pre-booking has become much easier and you can also reserve your sat nav or child seats at the time of booking. Most car hire companies now offer similar prices and have similar offers but one of the main grievances that people complain about on all of the review sites is that car hire companies don't tell you about their fuel policy. To many people the fuel policy is just another way for the car rental companies to squeeze a bigger profit margin from you when you arrive at your car rental check in.
We have all been in a similar situation... After a tiring day with a long flight you arrive at the Tenerife South airport to pick up your hire car. You queue patiently in line until it is your turn, then hand over your credit card, passport and driving licence to the cashier. After a few minutes once the paper work is almost complete, you get the usual "Would you like the excess insurance?". "No" is most people's usual answer. "I don't want that, thank you, its too expensive". So there you are, your weekly car hire is sorted, you just have to pay and the cashier says "That is 150 Euros for a week's car hire and 75 Euros for the full tank of fuel. Just return your rental empty". Now that might be well and fine if you plan a scenic holiday where you know you will be driving alot, but it is not ok if you are just planning to drive a few short hops. Also, fuel in Tenerife is relatively cheap and fluctuates around the one Euro a litre price. So 75 Euros for a full tank of gas is excessive, as most cars don't have anywhere near a 75 litre tank. Most rental cars have around a 45 to 50 litre capacity so the rental companies are pocketing the extra fuel charge. Good business for them!
