We have written previously on the best way to organise a car hire in Golf del Sur, and given some tips on getting comfortable with driving in Tenerife. Now you will be looking to get further afield and into the busier driving areas and take advantage of your car hire to explore Tenerife further. So of course, the next question you will have is "where is interesting to drive to?"
Driving Your Golf del Sur car hire in Tenerife South
Naturally, with so much to explore and only a week or two to do it in, having a basic knowledge or idea of what and where you would like to visit will make your whole Tenerife car hire experience a lot more enjoyable. Some people hire a car and use it to drive back and forth from Golf del Sur to the beaches of El Medano or the main resorts of Playa de las Americas or the other coastal resorts based in the south. However, there is a huge number of great "off the beaten track" places to drive to and explore within this region. The south coast of Tenerife is littered with a variety of picturesque sea-side towns and villages. Some of them are very Canarian in their appearance, whilst others are purpose built holiday resorts. Each and every one of them offers something a little different and worthwhile.
Some of the places well worth a visit include Costa del Silencio, which is primarily a holiday resort very popular with Belgian visitors to Tenerife. Just adjacent to Costa del Silencio is Las Galletas - a great little sea front town which has still managed to keep most of its true Canarian charm and character.
Palm Mar is also a recommended stop off with your rental car, especially on a Sunday. It is a tranquil town, great for some casual strolling and with some nice cafe's and bars to sit in and absorb the ambience. Perfect for those seeking a relaxing afternoon.
Just along the coast from Palm Mar are the two main Tenerife holiday resorts of Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. They are always a valuable exploration, but both resorts are always very busy and care should be taken until you are comfortable with driving your car hire in busy traffic.
If you drive up to the main TF1 motorway from Golf del Sur, you can continue straight past these two resorts without any difficulty. Once on the other side, the traffic does dissipate rapidly into a much more laid back driving experience.
Car Hire in Tenerife - Getting Off the Beaten Track
If you continue driving along the coast road, you will pass through many pretty towns and villages, ideal for finding the perfect spot for you and your family to explore. It can often happen that making the odd wrong turn can bring you to a beautiful spot untouched by many tourists, but still very popular with the locals. One of these places, El Puertito is located just by the camel park in the south. If you continue to drive past the camel park for a few kilometers you will arrive there. El Puertito is nestled in a little cove frequented by many Canarians at the weekend and is incredibly scenic.
Driving a little further along the coast road from here you will arrive at Calleo Salvaje. Ever popular with many other European residents and tourists, it also has some very attractive places to explore, and offers a somewhat different environment than the main holiday destinations on the island.
Finally, by continuing to drive your rental car onwards, you will arrive in the coastal towns of Playa San Juan, Playa de La Arena and Los Gigantes. All of these towns are very popular with tourists and if you have the time, we'd recommend a visit.
