Around the Golf

Golf del Sur was originally conceived and built as a holiday resort and golf course. The golf course was opened in 1987 and the hotels and holiday resort have been evolving ever since. Golf del Sur is situated only a few kilometres from Tenerife's main airport, Reina Sofia (or Tenerife Sur). As a thriving holiday resort with a top class golf course, Golf del Sur hotels and rental accommodation are often hard to find, and as each mini village within Golf del Sur has its own special character, we have tried hard to provide as much useful information here as we could, in order to allow readers to make the most informed decisions on hotel accommodation, or to select their preferred locations in which to rent holiday accommodation.
As the name suggests, Golf del Sur, in San Miguel de Abona, is a haven for golfers who pack the hotels coming from all over Europe and the world and includes a 27 hole golf course which is made up from three 9 hole courses, the North, South and Links course which can be played in different variations.
Accommodation in Golf del Sur is generally of a very high standard and there are many 4 and 5 star hotels and aparthotels in addition to the private rental possibilities, both of villas and apartments. The resort itself has an abundance of bars and restaurants and has its own commercial centre, San Blas. It is only a short taxi or bus ride to the main tourist areas of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas.
A Description of Golf del Sur
As you enter Golf del Sur you will notice the laid back village atmosphere compared to the hustle and bustle of the main resorts of Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos.
The entrance road is lined with fully grown sub tropical palm trees and many flowering plants. You will notice the verdant colours of the fairways and greens of the golf course set against the barren hills and mountains and the stunning deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean - all overlooked by the impressive sight of Mount Teide.
The area of the Golf del Sur resort covers 410 acres, and is in essence a large village with a golf course running through it. There is definitely an air of exclusivity around Golf del Sur and this brings an incredible amount of people who visit time and time again.
If you are a golfer then paradise truly awaits you.. With all year round favourable temperatures you are guaranteed to be able to play with the sun on your back even during the cold winter months of mainland Europe and the UK and many Golf del Sur hotels buzz in the evenings with talk of "that near hole in one".
Golf del Sur makes an ideal holiday, not only for golfers and older couples, but also families, with its many different activities and leisure facilities on offer. Being just a few kilometres away from the main motorway, it is the ideal place to be based in order to be able to explore the delights of Mount Teide and the rest of the island.
The variety of holiday activities has recently expanded due to the opening of a new marina, Marina San Miguel, which is situated between Golf del Sur and its neighbour Amarilla Golf resort. The promenade which joins the two has spawned an influx of new hotels, bars and restaurants which provide a great location to spend an evening overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
Restaurants and Bars
There is an abundance of bars and restaurants dotted around all over Golf del Sur, the main focal points being the San Blas commercial centre, the area around the Aguamarina Hotel and of course, many bars in each individual resort village on the Golf.
The bars and restaurants in the San Blas area offer a wide range of live family entertainment every night with something to suit everyones taste. The many restaurants offer culinary delights from all over the world from a simple snack to a full "a la carte" menu. There are Chinese restaurants, Indian, Japanese Teppenyaki, traditional fayre including tapas to full international menus. There are also several late bars in the area including a nightclub which stays open until the early hours of the morning.
If you fancy something a little different, then a short walk to Los Abrigos is definitely recommended, a little fishing village which has grown in recent years. Here you will find some of the best seafood restaurants in the whole of Tenerife - all perched above a delightfully quaint traditional fishing harbour. This is a truly fantastic way to spend the days - eating fresh seafood and basking in the Canary Islands sunshine.
Other Activities on the Golf
In addition to its many bars and restaurants, The San Blas commercial centre is a thriving shopping hub. There are well stocked supermarkets, banks, gift shops, hairdressers, duty free electronics, alcohol and tobacco and perfume shops, boutiques, internet cafes and car hire outlets.
Even though Golf del Sur is famous for its championship golf course and its natural beauty, it has many other activities for the non-golfer. For the sportier person "the Golf" as it is known locally offers a wide variety of facilities on its many complexes. These include squash courts, tennis courts, crazy golf, pool and snooker. Lovers of water-sports can find pretty much everything they need at the San Miguel marina. For the more relaxed health conscious, there is a spa and wellness centre on the Golf, offering treatments and therapies to promote relaxation and well-being. These health treatments include massage, physical toning, beauty treatments utilizing the acclimatised Roman style pool, hydro massage beds, multi jet showers, jacuzzis, saunas, plunge pools, Turkish baths, aromatherapy, reflexology, facial and body treatments and even a water gym.
For bowls enthusiasts, there is also the world famous Winter Gardens complex which offers a wonderful spa centre with various whirlpools and jacuzzi’s and is the home of the Tenerife international bowls stadium, which is acknowledged as one of the best bowling venues in the world.
You will be glad to know that there are many other activities available to keep both adults and children fully occupied each and every day.
